Tan Shin Yih (0334900) Experiential Design & Personal Project 1 Week 1 For the first class of experiential design & personal project 1, Mr. Mike brief us about the module and told us that we will have a collaboration project with RMIT students. He also explains to us how the collaboration will be going on and what we need to do for it. For let us understand more to the project we need to do, Mr. Mike also asks us to visit the previous work of RMIT student ( http://rmitdmcc.com/2018/ ). Mr. Mike also sends a survey to us to know everyone specialization so it would be easier to split the group later. We also being told to work with the Australian students for 2 weeks, and we will need to come out of a prototype by this 2 weeks time. We need to work with the RMIT students by this 2 weeks time from 10 am to 6 pm at CODA if we don't have any classes to attend. Before class ended, Mr. Mike brief us for a one day trip with the Australian students by next week ...
Week 1 ( 30/8/2018 ) Today, Ms. Anis brief us about what will be teaching for this module. Then, she also introduced to us that what is "Flip class". She told us that we will be having a flip class, base on what title we choose then we will be in the group with the people that choosing the same title and present the title to our classmate on that day. Then, Ms. Anis also brief us on our first assignment. We will need to create a poster based on the problems that we can see around the campus. The poster we create will need to attract student to see it so that to fix the problems. Ms. Anis also ask us to research and try to apply guerilla marketing to our poster design. Week 2 ( 6/9/2018 ) Today, Ms. Anis give us some lecture about the definition of ethics. Ethics breaks into 3 important points. 1. legalities- the rules that govern the profession ( copyright law, piracy, plagiarism, fair use, photo manipulation )
2. integrity - principles of right conduct ( spec work, crowdsourcing, responsibility to clients and contracts )
3.morality - the general nature of moral choices to be made by a person ( sustainability, social responsibility, cultural influence )
Besides that, Ms. Anis also tells us the 4 design considerations that we need to take note. 1. Reading habits: Make the graphics read top to bottom and use arrows to show the sequence and to direct the eye around the graphic.
2. Study of artistic expectations: Test first the visual with the expected audience to see how it is perceived generally to ensure that the use symbols are not depicted offensively / miscommunicated.
3. Allow for different learning styles:
- Avoid extremes: Use moderation of design in visual and text, formality and informality.
- Maintain neutrality: Avoid techniques that give visual a definite personality.
- Design multi-use graphics: Create visuals that can be read and understood in different ways.
4. Suppress unimportant details: There is a fine line between making an image recognizable and making it culturally specific. Pick graphics and visuals that your international readers can identify but include details that enhance recognition. - Disguise national differences: Avoid techniques that give the graphic a definite personality.
- Hide audience-specific details: Use a general viewpoint and not specifically targeted to a community.
- Use an icon or simplified drawing: compare a realistic visual to an icon and identify which one is easier to be understood.
- Omit textual labels on devices: Remove labels or recognizable text to create a general look
- Show all possible instance: If it is difficult to disguise variable features, it is safer to list all of them together.
Then, Ms. Anis ask us to discuss in a group and find the example of a visual instruction that utilizes all of the design considerations effectively.
This is the example that we find to present for the topic. After that, Ms. Anis ask us to think about the topic that we wanted to do for our first assignment then she shows us some works that done by our seniors. Then, we present to her our first idea for our first assignment one by one. I present to Ms. Anis that the problem that I found in Taylor is about the usage of the elevator. Some people take elevators although they are only traveling to one or two levels above or below, resulting in a delay or unable to take elevators for those people who are traveling to further levels. I hope to design a poster to encourage people to take the staircase.
Week 3 ( 13/9/2018 ) Today, Ms. Anis introduce us about Social Classification. Four common social classes informally recognized in many societies are: 1. Upper class 2. Middle class 3. Working class 4. Lower class Definition of Social class = human social organization 1. To examine the ways in which changes in the class structure impact on the process of social change 2. The ways in which the consciousness of different segments of the population is influenced by the class position 3. How class consciousness translates into political action and leads to social transformation Karl Marx observed that there are two classes of people who earn income through different means: 1. Proletarian - People who work but do not own the means of production 2. Capitalist - People who own the means of productions like land, factories, businesses etc. The social class transformation 1. Hunting and gathering - as part of the survival process 2. Horticultural - utilize gardening skills to grow food, besides hunting and gathering 3. Agrarian - wide-scale farming to generate more food, hunting and gathering grew less 4. Industrial - agriculture now includes manufacturing, services, and skilled experts In the tutorial class, Ms. Anis ask us to find our references and mood board for our assignment 1 and show it to her our progression. Below are my references and mood board. Before the class, I found a lot of references for the poster that encouraging people using the staircase, but then I found that using illustration for this topic is so boring and not attractive to people. I think that comparing with nice illustration, typography will be more eye-catching for this topic. So I decided to do focus my idea in typography design.
Below are the sketches that I draw for my poster design idea. I present to Ms. Anis about my first draft idea, and Ms also giving some idea for my poster. After that, Ms. Anis proceed my idea, she asks me to choose two favorite ideas and develop more on both ideas. The draft that I chose is the first draft and the third draft.
Week 4 ( 20/9/2018 ) Today, Ms. Anis gives us a lecture on Creative Class. Traditional social classification often classify people on the basis of their habits, lifestyle choices or by their income level. But in this new world, people who are driven by the creative ethos are classified as a whole new cluster altogether due to its unlikely nature from social interactions, geographical meltdowns, high usage of technological advancement. The creative class is the norm-setting class of our time in many different manners: - Individuality - Self-expression - Openness to differences This set the creative class to the other social classes of lower, upper, working and services where the these are primarily paid to do jobs, whereas the Creative Class have more autonomy and flexibility. She also gives us a short recap of what she taught last week. Then, we have a group exercise to research 5 famous designs/images/illustrations/photographs of each era ( 50's - current ) and present our findings to the class. Week 5 ( 27/9/2018 ) MC. Here is the slide for our group exercise.
