Experiential Design & Personal Project 1

Tan Shin Yih (0334900) Experiential Design  & Personal Project 1 Week 1 For the first class of experiential design & personal project 1, Mr. Mike brief us about the module and told us that we will have a collaboration project with RMIT students. He also explains to us how the collaboration will be going on and what we need to do for it. For let us understand more to the project we need to do, Mr. Mike also asks us to visit the previous work of RMIT student ( http://rmitdmcc.com/2018/ ). Mr. Mike also sends a survey to us to know everyone specialization so it would be easier to split the group later. We also being told to work with the Australian students for 2 weeks, and we will need to come out of a prototype by this 2 weeks time. We need to work with the RMIT students by this 2 weeks time from 10 am to 6 pm at CODA if we don't have any classes to attend. Before class ended, Mr. Mike brief us for a one day trip with the Australian students by next week ...

Week 2 ( 3/9/2018 )

In our first class, Dr. Hayati brief us the module outline of this subject. After briefing the module to us, she asked us to choose a topic that we like on the first assignment to research and gather in a group with our classmate based on the topic we choose. I decide to choose whether web design or motion graphics. Then, Dr. Hayati comes to explain to us what to do and what to search by group.

Week 2 ( 7/9/2018 )

MC.

The topic that I chose is the motion graphic. Before I start to do the research on the problem that faces in motion graphics area, I did find out the type of motion graphic then only I know that there is a lot type of motion graphics.

Week 3 ( 10/9/2018 )

Public Holiday.

I did found  5 Key Ingredients for a Great Motion Design.

1) Story: There are several uses of the story in animation. It all boils down to whether or not the story is a good one or a bad one. Commissioned for the Holocaust Memorial Memory Makers Project, this video tells a compelling and heart-wrenching true story.

2) Environment: You need an environment or a believable space. A lot of times that comes down to aesthetics. This video takes excellent advantage of physical space, adding motion design elements to present a visually fascinating ensemble.
3) Movement: Obviously, the animation wouldn’t happen without movement. Movement can happen in very many ways. It could happen in stop-motion form where it is choppy. It could also happen in a very fluid way.

4) Audio: Sound (or lack thereof) can be used in different forms—sound effects, music, etc. A designer may choose music or sounds to create a unique experience or a compelling story. This video offers an educational and visually intriguing look at the basics of motion design using excellent visual examples with accompanying sound effects.
5) Quality Execution: Make sure to produce a quality product. Any animation needs to be flawless and there can’t be any errors or any seams or any loose ends that need tying up. There are few who rival Saul Bass when it comes to excellent motion design, a talent particularly apparent in his film title work.
Week 3 ( 14/9/2018 )

Today class, Dr. Hayati have introduced the 8 step of the research process to us.

Step 1: Formulating a Research Problem

- Identifies your destination and will tell readers what you intend to research
- Formulating a research problem is to decide what you want to find out about.
Step 2: Conceptualizing a Research Design
- Research involves systematic, controlled, valid and thorough exploration.
Step 3: Constructing an Instrument for Data Collection
- Decide how you are going to collect data for the proposed study and then construct a research instrument for data collection.
Step 4: Selecting a Sample
Step 5: Writing a Research Proposal
- Put everything together in a way that provides adequate information
- A research proposal must tell the reviewer the following information:
      - What you are proposing to do
      - How you plan to proceed
      - Why you selected the proposed strategy.
      - A statement of the objectives of the study
      - The research instruments you are planning to use
      - The rough background on the research content
Step 6: Collecting Data
Depending on your plans, you might commence interviews, did questionnaires, conduct a discussion or make observations.
Step 7: Processing Data
Type of information: descriptive, quantitative, qualitative.
Step 8: Writing a Research Report

Write your report in an academic style and be divided into different chapters or sections based on the main themes of your study.
I also present to Dr. Hayati that the problem statement that I found for my assignment 1 is motion graphic isn't known by a lot of people compare with gaming, film... Then, Dr. Hayati told me this can't be counted as a problem because people that are not in this industry don't know about this area is a normal thing and why everyone must understand about motion graphic?

Dr. Hayati suggests to me to focus on one type of motion graphic, not the overall motion graphic so I can more focus on the problem. Here is my new problem statement to research for the assignment 1:

"Kinetic typography commonly seen as nicely presented with smooth transition however at times failed to convey the intended message across to the audience."

I also found a motion graphic that impresses me a lot. Although they only using kinetic typography for the video, as an audience, I can feel the feeling of the children inside the video and also understand the message that they wanted to spread.

Week 4 ( 16/9/2018 )

Public Holiday.

Week 4 ( 21/9/2018 )

Today, we have a class at the library to have a lecture by the librarian. We learn the research process, searching strategy and also learn how to access Taylor's library and learn how to use it.

There are 5 processes for the research process
1. Define your topic
    - look for subject words
    - use searching strategies
    - boolean operator ( expand or reduce search )
2. Select your sources ( print/online )
    - sources information
    - track searching history
3. Research, locate and access materials
4. Evaluate Sources
5. Use Ethically
    - why, what, when, where, how

Week 5 ( 24/9/2018 )

Today, we have one on one consultation about our first assignment with Dr. Hayati. Dr. Hayati proceeds with my research problem and problem statement. Then, she asks me to edit the sentences for the objective and told me for the objective we need to write something that we can do research on it not an execution for the project.

Then, Dr. Hayati told me that the research that I found is for the upcoming assignment but not for now but I still can save it and use it on the assignment 3 implementation. Dr. Hayati asks me to think more question, ask myself for more question and also for the research problem that I found so that I can do more research and more details in this area.

Week 5 ( 28/9/2018 )

Today, Dr. Hayati explains the details of the eight research process to us. She asked us to try to follow the process while we are doing our research project because it will help us a lot and make sure we can know our progress and check where to continue.

Besides that, Dr. Hayati also introduced to us on Critical Review. She explains a slide from Monash University, Australia that present about what is Critical Review.

Critical Review is an analysis and evaluation of a book, article, or other media. Writing a good critical review requires that you understand the material and that you know how to analyze and
evaluate that material using appropriate criteria.

A critical review of a journal article evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of an article's ideas and content. It provides a description, analysis, and interpretation that allow readers to assess the article's value.

Dr. Hayati also explains to us that what we need to take note before we read the article. She also mentioned what point to consider while we reading an article.

This is the process of writing a Critical Review:

And here is the structure of a Critical Review:

Before the class end, Dr. Hayati told us that we can start to do more research on our research proposal. She asks us at least read 3 different article that related to our title. We also can start to write our research proposal this week and show her on week 6 for consultation.

Week 6 ( 1/10/2018 )

Today, Dr. Hayati have a one to one consultation for our proposal that submits yesterday. Then, Dr. Hayati told me that I have a good question, but the question can't be used now because we are doing a proposal research, not a prototype outcome yet. So, the research question that I have written need to make a bit changes. Dr. Hayati also asks me to find more journal to support my report and read more article. Then, I add another journal to support my topic.

Week 6 ( 5/10/2018 )

Today, Dr. Hayati have a short review with us on last week tutorial, which is the critical review. She asks us to prepare a presentation slide that includes 3 critical reviews based on our research, then presents to the class by next week Monday. We will need to refer to more article and explain our research to our classmate.

Week 7 ( 8/10/2018 )

Today, we have a presentation section on our critical review. Everyone present their critical review based on their topic. Then, Dr. Hayati gives us some comment and told us that she will have a one to one consultation to everyone by next class.

Week 7 ( 12/10/2018 )

Today, Dr. Hayati have a short review on last week lecture and also gives us some consultation for the assignment. She also explains to us what we need to do now and what we are going to do. She told us to write for a critical review, always choose the journal first then only books. She asks us to read more article and explore more information for our title.

10 Critical review report:

Week 8 ( 15/10/2018 )

Today, Dr. Hayati ask us to think about who will be involved in our research, she told us that next week we will be having a presentation on our primary data collection. She asks us to choose the method that we want to use for primary data collection and state why we using that method and also state the objective that we wanted to reach.

Dr. Hayati also gives us a short lecture about methods of data collection part 1 & 2. She told us that she will further explain the details with us on Friday class.

Week 8 ( 19/10/2018 )

Today, Dr. Hayati giving us a review lecture about primary and secondary data. She also explains the double Q which is quantitative and qualitative to us.

Week 9 ( 22/10/2018 )

MC. Presentation on primary data.

Week 9 ( 26/10/2018 )

On today class, Dr. Hayati asks us to continue with our critical review and start to think about the question that will be asked during the interview or survey. She also uploads a sample of request interview face to face or online for the expert person in our research.

Dr. Hayati also gives us some advice about the mail interview.
A formal and humble way without being cocky and pushy
Customize each email for each person we will be sending to.
- Ask whether the selected individual interests to participate in the research before sending the questionnaires.
- Estimate 5 days for people to reply due to their work
- Do a test runs on the questionnaires with students outside of arts and design course before mailing to make sure that the questions are easy to understand and to answer.

Week 10 ( 29/10/2018 )

On today class, we continue with our primary data collection survey and the interview letter that we need to send to the expert person or company.

Week 10 ( 2/11/2018 )

On today class, Dr. Hayati gives me a consultation with my primary data collection. She told me to make the observation questions and video into the spreadsheet so that I can do the observation in online. She also told me to write the title and question of what I wanted to observe and collect from my audience so that people can understand what I want and this makes me collect the right information.

Midterm break (5/11/2018, 9/11/2018 )

Midterm semester break, No classes.

We continue with our primary data collection. The method that I have chosen to collect my primary data is online observation, online survey, and email interview. We will need to send our question to the expert person and send the reminder email for them.

This is my question for those experts.

Besides, I also conducted my online observation which is to collect the point of view of design student and non-design student.

My observation form will be separated into 8 variable points such as style, technique, storyline, messages, music, font, color and their review for the video. I have selected 9 different types of video for this observation.

I create a Google Form too to enhance the data collected from the audience point of view.

Week 11 (12/11/2018, 16/11/2018 )

For this two week, we have started to write our primary data report. I analyze the data collected from 12 participants.

I also analyze the 56 responses from my online survey.

Besides, I also got the responses from the expert person, I gather their responses into one document so that it is easier for me to start with my report.

Week 12 (19/11/2018, 23/11/2018 )

This is my first attempt report for primary data.

Week 13 (26/11/2018, 30/11/2018 )

Then, I started to prepare my presentation slides for week 14. We will need to create a final presentation slide and share our research journey with our classmate on week14.

This is the revised version of the report after getting the comment from Dr. Hayati.

Week 14 (3/12/2018, 7/12/2018)
On Monday section would be the final presentation section for us to present one by one to our classmate.

Here are my final presentation slides

Dr. Hayati also asks us to check our plagiarism for the 10 journals of our critical review.
